To the ancient Greek, the tiger was a legendary animal, known as the manticore (from Persian martya, ???man???, and xwar, ???comer???), and described in ???Indika???, a treaty by a certain Ctesias about India, which used to be popular among Greek naturalists and historians but is sadly lost today.
