Interestingly, some of the commonly encountered nutrients are predominantly present as part of high molecular weight compounds such as glycans/glycoproteins (GlcNAc), proteins (most amino acids), or lipids (glycerol, fatty acids) suggesting that macromolecule hydrolysis might be an important aspect of pathogen nutrition in infected tissues.
