I guess my view is clear by now, but for the record, I???ll be explicit: people don???t like addicted h/h because they think addiction is a character flaw, an immoral state, from which it is nearly impossible to recover (for the reasons you state), and heroes and heroines have to be, at best, morally perfect, and at worst, nearly morally perfect with minor but lovable flaws.
