  • Although the invention is not to be so limited, it is believed that the presence in the sulfur oxide absorbent of a metal such as vanadium, iron, chromium, a platinum group metal, rhenium or a rare earth metal serves to enhance the efficiency of the absorbent by catalyzing the oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the exhaust gas to sulfur trioxide which is more easily captured by the absorbent.
