As a writer, Bowles is a kind of tabula rasa: because both love and religion were considered unmentionable and obscene in his family, because he is an isolated person who was never at ease in his own culture, because of his existentialism, a clean slate on which is written both alien cultures and the reactions of Westerners to encounters with them.
