  • For the ancient Egyptians, pigment manufacture was a sophisticated craft: besides the Egyptian blue (calcium copper silicate) mentioned above, they could make a yellow rather like the later Naples yellow from lead and antimony oxides, and they used vinegar fumes to corrode lead and copper into white (lead white 2PbCO3??Pb(OH)2) and green (verdigris; copper(ii) acetate) pigments.
