(Hopefully units in reserve can still construct fortifications) reserve will not hide these guys from an enemy bombardment, but will prevent them from participating in any attacks you make. note also that there is 2 kinds of reserve, 1 is 'pursuit' he is useful for immediately chasing the bad guys if your attack forces an enemy retreat
