  • Current techniques using very large telescopes to study fairly bright stars can measure radial velocities with a precision of a few metres per second, provided that the star has very sharp spectral lines, such as is observed for Sun-like stars and stars of types K and M. This means that at present the radial-velocity method normally can detect only massive Jupiter-like extrasolar planets.
