  • If you???ve purchased USB hard disks, chances are they are already formatted as FAT32 drives (vfat) and you can skip this step (unless you want to regain some space, because FAT32 is extremely inefficient.) If you choose a format other than FAT32, be advised that any other kind of file system, such as ext3, won???t be readable in Windows.
