  • EDIT: Well, you do not have to worry about modification under the GC's nose provided that the objects have no mutable structure, including reference counts, which can be modified by threads other than the GC. Then again, most functional languages have letrec, so you would have to have circular reference checking either way, so it is easier to just use a mark-and-sweep based GC, like generational GC. (A
