  • Most of the heat on Venus is due to the peculiar heat-trap its atmosphere provides. (Mercury has no atmosphere to trap heat.) Venus's massive atmosphere is made mostly of carbon dioxide, which has a peculiar property: it is transparent to visible light, but nearly completely blocks infrared ??? sometimes called heat radiation.
