  • Antigen administered via mucosal routes (oral, intranasal, aerosol inhalation) induces regulatory T cells that can suppress systemic responses to the same antigen (mucosal tolerance), but simultaneously can also induce CTL. This 'double-edged sword' is a potential hazard when attempting to prevent an autoimmune disease such as type 1 diabetes by mucosal delivery of an autoantigen.
