On Maemo/MeeGo we can do apt-get install couchdb to get a system service running, if other OSs would support this more easily (not necessarily through apt-get, but in general through some sort of package manager) that would go a long way, but currently, we are battling compiler edge-cases, linker flags and curious interpretations of POSIX syscalls.
