Through a seemingly natural evolution from bebop, hard bop, cool, and other jazz idioms, its emphasis on chaotic, spontaneous improvisation, jagged rhythms unsweetened by melodies and hooks, and democratic soloing eliminated most listeners' preconceptions of jazz music.
