Although this ex vivo model has some limitations, such as the development of smaller neointimal lesions than those seen in vivo due to the lack of flow (shear stress) and infiltrating inflammatory cells, which contribute to neointimal formation in vivo, this model allows researchers to focus on the role of matrix remodelling, SMC proliferation, and migration.
