Quite generally, if the Universe were fundamentally discontinuous, it couldn???t have continuous symmetries such as the rotational symmetry, the Lorentz symmetry, and even descriptions in terms of gauge symmetries (which aren???t real full-fledged symmetries but redundancies) would be impossible.
